Kyoukai no Kanata 01 – Fetishists please form an orderly line

I like glasses too.

The premise of this entire show.

“I really hate meganekkos (tl note: meganekkos means glasses-wearing girl)”, said no one ever in the history of the world. And that is what this show is about. Girls wearing glasses. The demon-slaying and school life segments are merely a sideshow. After the gloriousness of Hyouka, Kyoani embarked on a shameful journey consisting of chuunis and homoerotic swimmers. But that’s all in the past. Get ready for… Hyouka Part 2: Glasses-wearing Demon Hunters.

PLOT

Real niggas love Hyouka

This is what happens when Chitanda grows up on the East side.

I wasn’t kidding about the Hyouka comparisons, by the way. This show also features a literature club, complete with Chitanda lookalike. Only, this one is voiced by Nagato Yuki and is rather frank with her words. And also about 73% less curious.

KINNINARIMASU

Yeah, I miss her too.

The premise of this show is as follows: the MC, Akihito (glasses fetish guy), is an immortal half-demon…thing. In his daily life he hangs out in the literature clubroom with his friend Mitsuki (the Chitanda clone). Who’s the daughter of the leading demon hunter family in the prefecture. And who seems to want to make the sex with the MC.

You could even say I'm curious.

I wonder what brand of lip balm she uses.

And she’s a bit of a tsundere. Oh my god she’s perfect.

so moe

B-baka~

And then we have glasses girl, who’s descended from an extinct line of demon hunters who can conjure weapons from their blood. Problem is, she isn’t very good at killing demons. In fact, she’s terrified of them.

In her spare time, she works as a Skyrim NPC.

In her spare time, she works as a Skyrim NPC.

Since MC is immortal, glasses-girl sees this as an opportunity to use MC as practice for her handbloodsword. MC has a hard-on for girls who look good in glasses so he doesn’t tell her to piss off. Meanwhile, Chitanda-lookalike is maybe a little bit jealous that she doesn’t look good in glasses herself so she implies implications about glasses-girl having a dark past. Guess we’ll see what happens with that next week.

THOUGHTS AND FEELS

HNNNNNGG

Quite well, thank you.

Wikipedia lists this show as a darkly fantastical supernatural action show under genres, and while there is certainly some action and a fantastic lollipop licking segment, the show certainly doesn’t seem dark. In fact it’s rather yellow-tinged. I guess Akihito being repeatedly stabbed like a voodoo doll test subject is rather dark, but so far this show has played it off as a joke.

see what I did there?

In Another show, this would have been fatal.

Regardless of genre discrepancies, the first episode of this show has piqued my interest enough that I’m awaiting episode 2 with a fair amount of anticipation.

tee hee

If nothing more than to see what she puts into her mouth next.

  1. I’m hoping the ‘dark’ fantasy part will kick in soon, since that was one of my main reasons for putting this show so high up on my to-watch list for the new anime season. It’s undeniably fantasy and there’s no lack of blood, but like you I’m a bit confused as to why (based off the first episode alone) it’s been classified as dark. It’s not as if the series doesn’t have anything else going for it, but I can’t help but feel just a little disappointed by what Kyoukai no Kanata has dished out so far.

  2. Well, there’s still a fourth character yet to be introduced (Mitsuki’s brother, also in the Lit. club), and from the bits we’ve seen of him in the first episode I’ve been getting a bit of a sinister vibe from him. Honestly, I’d be fine with this show being slice of life with fantasy elements. And considering that Kyoani hasn’t done any real “dark” shows since FMP!:TSR, I can’t really see anything changing with this show.
