Is anybody still watching this show for its artistic merit? For all three of you out there, this week’s episode actually brings into question the matter of perception. Well, for about five minutes, then it goes back to tits.
PLOT? WHAT PLOT?
This week’s episode introduces the character of Kirie Kanoe (Kare Kano? lolol I made a Japanese pun): granddaughter of Yuuko’s sister, supposedly looks just like Yuuko but with smaller tits, and has a bit of an inferiority complex. She attempts to warn Teiichi about the dangers of ghostly maiden sexual intercourse, but he rejects her advice.
Essentially, Kirie’s theory is that the perception of Yuuko’s physical form varies from person to person. Since Teiichi’s only thinking about her boobs, he sees her has a beautiful young maiden with long dark hair, pale white skin, etc., etc. However, for those not under Yuuko’s spell, she ends up looking like a long-haired version of the Sandman.
So convincing is Kirie that Teiichi eventually becomes swayed by her, and they spend about a quarter of the episode running away from Yuuko. But since this show would end prematurely if the two didn’t reconcile, Teiichi eventually accepts Yuuko for who she is, and Kirie joins the ghostbusting club as the fourth member.
THOUGHTS AND FEELS
Quality-wise, not much has changed from the previous episode. While the animation and art is mostly serviceable, there are times where the budget is called into question. Especially one of the running scenes, where the fps was something around…five. But seeing as the budget handicap is something that we’ll have to live with for the remainder of the series, we’ll move on to different things.
There are three scenes of significance in this episode. Firstly, that the original Yuuko died with a broken leg, and judging by the shrine located by her body, her death may not have been an accident. Readers of the manga will be no stranger to speculation that Yuuko was killed as some sort of sacrifice. But seeing as we do not have any definitive proof, this will remain as speculation for now.
The second scene would be the one where Teiichi accepts Yuuko for who she is, by listing all of her qualities and characteristics again. Note, however, that his eyes are closed during the entire recitation. Are they closed to reject outside influence? Or is it more symbolic, in the sense that he is closing his eyes to reality? Given that Yuuko is only shown from Teiichi’s point of view, I suppose we won’t know what the “true” image of Yuuko is, at least for awhile.
The third scene, shown above, is supposed to symbolic of Yuuko catching Teiichi in her web…or something like that. It does look quite ominous since spiders are creepy motherfuckers and one does not simply escape from a giant symbolic spider web. Anyway, this scene also reminded me of Hyouka from earlier this week, only much less moe.
I really do wish this show would have more instances of Yuuko doing cute things with Niiya than just…tits every other scene. This may sound sacrilegious, but one does get tired of tits after awhile, even ghostly ones.
And now to clear out my anime backlog of Loco Koko and Hime Cut 1…
